This week is apple mania! We are examining, touching, tasting, smelling, weighing, singing about, reading about and every other thing you can do with apples. This is the way children learn best! If I just show them a picture and tell them about an apple they won't retain it. They must use all of their senses, in many different ways, to build that knowledge. Here are some pictures of some of the experiences we have had so far with apples. Scooping apple scented water beads into buckets They had to match the daubers to the colors Taste testing the apples Graphing our favorite kind of apple after we tasted all three Here are the results. I never thought it would be green. Painting with apples Can you balance an apple on your head while walking a straight line? Apple Math They are really enjoying all the construction going on outside our playground. We read the story Ten Apples Up on Top and they added ten apples on top of their head in their journals.

This week is all about owls. We learned some new vocabulary such as raptor, talons and nocturnal. We made pine cone owls and experimented with magnets. We measured and sang some songs about owls. This class is so much fun! Enjoy the pictures they are worth a thousand words. Using tongs to transport the owls into the tray (look at those fine motor skills being developed) Line Tracing They made pine cone owls. Experimenting with magnets (they were fascinated) Look at the intensity on his face. "Look Mrs. April I made a happy face". LOL
We do a lot of fine motor activities in our classroom. What are fine motor skills and why are they so important? Here is a great site that explains it all very well: www.fingergym.info/downloads/Finemotordevpp1-4.pdf. Notice the gripping of the straw as he tries to place it through that tiny hole. All of these activities are designed to build those fine motor skills. However they are in disguise as a fun game/activity. Every activity we do in the classroom has been thoroughly planned out to improve/enhance some skill and I work hard to implement activities to meet every learning style. Enjoy the pictures! Color matching (suppose to be, lol) and squeezing those pieces into the holes is no easy task for developing hands. Look how well they are working together. We practiced writing the letter "B" (they love dry erase boards) and we also bounced a ball on a giant letter "B". Wow! Yellow and blue make green"! This was our final product. The sensory tub always has a line. After we graphed "Would You Kiss a Frog" we had to play pin the lips on the frog. We reviewed the frog life cycle and our fancy word of the week was spawn. Ask them if they know what spawn is and if they remember what happens after the egg. We always finish our day with a song and a good story.
Yay! It's my first post of the new school year. We had a very busy but wonderful day! This week is all about frogs and they really enjoyed it today! We read a non-fiction book about the life cycle of a frog, sang Five Green Speckled Frogs, played a frog flipping game and a racing game, graphed whether we would kiss a frog or not and had a visit from Zoo Man. I really hope you all enjoy this blog and it gives you a glimpse into our world at school. Thank you so much for sharing your sweet children with me. I love them already! They had to roll the dice and place that many flies in the tray with the frog (his mouth opens when you squeeze him). This is a great fine motor as well as a math. Making Speckled Frogs Placing marbles on the frog suction cups with tongs Reading all about frogs Sorting Frogs They had to flip the frog in the circle onto a friends picture and then tell me the name of the friend. They rolled the dice with colors on it and the color that landed was the color frog that moved. It was a race to see who could get to the finish line first (counting, one-to-one correspondence, colors and don't forget sharing and taking turns). All that in one fun game. I didn't get a picture of K until today. Clearly several were not fond of kissing a frog but most said they would touch one if I brought one in to class.LOL Here is a picture of Zoo Man and some of the animals we met today! Ask them if they remember any of the names. Ask them if they remember what the shell is made out of We also celebrated J's birthday today! Happy Birthday sweet girl!
