Fall and pumpkins and leaves oh my.........We did some pumpkin investing today. We sang a new song about leaves, read a pumpkin book, measured a pumpkin, counted the lines on our pumpkin, made pumpkin squish paintings, made leaf patterns and so much more. Our days are packed full from beginning to end. Sorting Pounding golf tees into a pumpkin Sorting circles and not circles in our journals
We began our day by reading Bedtime for Monsters. Next we did an experiment with baking soda, vinegar and balloons. They told us what kind of monster they wanted (scary, happy, sad, etc) and Mrs. Miriam and I drew the faces on the balloons. Then they poured two tsp of baking soda into the balloon. We had vinegar in the bottle and they would lift up the balloon so the baking soda would fall in. This is the result. They were fascinated. We talked about a chemical reaction. Science is so cool! We also made monsters by coloring coffee filters with markers and then squirting it with a water bottle so all the colors would run together. They had the option of adding eyes and teeth if they wanted to. They are all different. Due to the rain we had indoor play. They loved crawling through the tunnel. Better them than me. LOL
Our theme is happy monsters this week. We had a lot of fun doing the monster mash, singing about five little monsters, reading "Go Away Big Green Monster" and more. Making magnetic monsters Feeding the monsters letters Monster Math Reenacting the story
Today we did an activity about echolocation. We used a pie pan and some paper towel tubes and discovered how bats fly by using their brain and auditory nervous system to produce detailed images of its surroundings. We sponge painted a bat scene and read Stellaluna. They had to find the missing number Hiding Bats One-to-one correspondence The writing center is always hopping. It makes me so happy. If you have any extra envelopes or stationary laying around that you don't need I would love it for our writing center. Even note pads, shopping lists, etc all encourage writing this these little frogs and this is what we want. "D" for dots in journals
Today we had a visit from the fire department. We also began our study of bats. We sang a new song about bats, counted bats, read some books about them, patterned and much more. Enjoy the pictures! Making letter "S" on the lite brite. Bat Counting Bat Patterns Ordering Bats Fire trucks are so fun Placing bat erasers on pencils. This is a great fine motor activity. Every activity we do is carefully planned to develop or strengthen a skill. Singing Bippity, Boppity Bat Today in music they practiced fast and slow with Ms. Rachel by galloping like horses. Then the horses got tired and coll.apsed
We became scientists today and dissected spiders. They had to dig out 8 legs, 2 eyes and 2 body parts out of Knox gelatin using their tools. I was the mad scientist. They think I'm crazy but we have fun. We practiced throwing cotton balls (bugs) at a hula hoop with tape (web) to see how spiders get caught on a web. This was a good gross motor activity. Lacing Webs O - "Look Mrs. April I made a rainbow." At motor skills they used the parachute with Ms. Heidi Then a little stretching at the end At chapel we sang a song about the ten commandments and learned about Zacchaeus. They have been fascinated with the construction work going on outside. This is the fun book we enjoyed reading.
This week is all about spiders. We sang and old favorite "The Itsy Bitsy Spider", read a book about them, did a science activity, marble painted webs and much more. Placing eyes on the spider Counting dots and matching the corresponding number Sorting spider rings and placing them on the sticks Singing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" and acting it out with spider rings and straws Vertical cutting at the easel Drawing spiders in our journals The Itsy Bitsy Spider fell through the water spout Making spiders with play doh Marble painting webs We did an activity about spiders and webs. I explained that spider webs are sticky because that is how they catch their prey. They touched the doubled sided tape to see how sticky it was and then I asked them why the spider doesn't stick to his own web. They dipped their finger in oil and rubbed it across the tape. Then they told me it wasn't sticky anymore. Spiders have oil on their feet and this is how they don't stick to the web. Then I explained that sometimes the web gets dusty and so we sprinkled baby powder over the oil. The tape wasn't sticky or oily anymore. If the web gets dusty bugs won't stick anymore and the spider will have to spin a new web. They really enjoyed this hands on science activity. We also got to see some real spiders and pics of some pretty cool webs. Block Creations
We had such a fun and busy day. It started with us engaging all of our senses at once by popping some popcorn. Then we did a listening cd where they had to listen for the sound and hold up the card for that sound. We then went for a listening/looking walk. I can't believe how fast the time flies with them. It's not enough time. Here are some pictures of our day. I even put my listening ears on and I think they thought I had lost my mind. LOL Our listening walk They checked off the things that they saw or heard. Reading books about our senses. Just like walking and talking reading is developmental and children all develop at their own rate. We must offer them rich materials and expose them to reading and questions about what they read. This will help to develop a love for reading and the desire to want to reach for a book on their own. Here is a link that explains the stages of reading for those that may not know already. http://web.scott.k12.va.us/awettack/stages_of_reading_development.htm Painting with bells on the end of our brushes.
We are exploring the five senses this week. We talked about why our senses are important. G shared his experiences with Friendly for his birthday! We used our senses of smell, touch and sight to trace letters in shaving cream. Talk about a sensory explosion. We used our senses of sight, hearing, and touch to balloon paint. We put rice and bells inside. Anybody recognize these from childhood? Maybe you're all too young! They were fascinated with them. They were having quite a feast. Why is dramatic play important? "Dramatic play can be defined as a type of play where children accept and assign roles, and then act them out. It is a time when they break through the walls of reality, pretend to be someone or something different from themselves, and dramatize situations and actions to go along with the roles they have chosen to play. And while this type of play may be viewed as frivolous by some, it remains an integral part of the developmental learning process by allowing children to develop skills in such areas as abstract thinking, literacy, math, and social studies, in a timely, natural manner." If you want to read more about it visit this site: http://www.earlychildhoodnews.com/earlychildhood/article_view.aspx?ArticleID=751 Who are they imitating here? They learned a new song about the five senses and here they are doing the hand motions. Ask them to sing it for you. I bet they remember it. They have the most brilliant minds. Here we are doing an activity involving our sense of touch. They all received a mitten with something different inside. They had to reach their hand in and tell me what it was without looking. Making letters/numbers with yarn on sand paper.
