Yesterday we engaged in a STEM activity. We talked about engineers and what they do. They were given multiple materials to work with and the freedom to manipulate them any way they wanted. We engaged them in open ended questions. This is how they learn best about how the world works. It was a lot of fun. Some of them asked if we could do it again. We also guessed what was in the stocking with clues I gave them, sang a color/rhyming song about Rudolph's nose and graphed whether they would rather be Santa's elf or reindeer. I guess flying is pretty appealing for a preschooler. Have a blessed weekend!
"From birth, children are curious. You can build on that natural curiosity by developing their interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Use daily routines to build on skills and concepts in math and science. By talking, reading, singing, playing, signing or using other ways to communicate – whatever works best for your preschoolers – you can help develop their STEM skills through play and exploration. Easy ways to promote young children’s natural abilities as scientists and engineers is by encouraging them to document their observations by drawing, painting, or recording their voices describe what they are noticing; constructing towers with blocks or other objects; and talking about the changes in nature – like the weather." Here is the link to this great article that I pulled this from if you want to read more about it. https://www2.ed.gov/about/inits/ed/earlylearning/talk-read-sing/stem-toolkit-preschool-teachers.pdf
